More Apr. 3 JF Chen Shana Nys Dambrot Calendar Dance Recommended Tere O'Connor Dance The Skirball Cultural Center doesn't present much dance, but when it does, the group usually is a modern/contemporary company, usually from New York, usually worth attention, and usually connected with Jewish culture. Choreographer Tere O'Connor and his troupe clearly fill the first three criteria, and the two works being performed, Sister and Poem, may touch on the fourth element. As a choreographer, O'Connor is known for finding unexplored middle ground between seeming unalterably opposite elements. The two works scheduled here are part of a multiyear project titled BLEED, which O'Connor has described as exploring how conflicting cultures eventually blend in a symbiotic relationship. Given how much blood is spilled in cultural/geopolitical/religious conflicts, the search for blending rather than bleeding is a noble endeavor. After seeing parts of BLEED in a studio setting, Skirball director of programs Jordan Peimer convinced O'Connor to stage the performance in the Getty Gallery rather than the theater. In a way, the story of “Call for Papers: Italo Bressan, Franco Marrocco and Alessandro Savelli” is as much a story about friendship as it is about modern European painting. The three artists are close in age. All attended the Brera Art Academy in Milan, and all currently teach there (Marrocco is also the school’s director). Although they worked independently and experimented with other media during the conceptual and stylistic reformations of the 1970s and ’80s, all three eventually not only returned to Brera but to abstract painting as well. Curated by Anna Dusi and Giovanni Iovane, the show (as its name implies) comprises works on paper and references the academic and poetic idioms in which they remain rooted. Concurrently, Bergamot Station’s ADC/Building Bridges hosts “Franco Marrocco: Work on Paper,” curated by Dusi and Marisa Caichiolo, exploring the artist’s versatility in creating substantial works of art with the most ephemeral of materials. Thumb-sized matryoshka dolls stand near a wall, and there's a haphazard construction-material sculpture, which looks a lot like Anderson's much bigger works in the next room. See also: Jay Z Concert in Grand Park Sparks L.A. The memo, obtained by the Weekly, says, "Allowing this event would set a precedent for other concerts. The LAPD memo says costly perimeter policing would result if Jay Z and rave artists were allowed to take over the park. The loud music and [a] $100.00 price would encourage persons to jump fences in order to enter the location, especially near the "Techno Music" area, where attempts to sneak into the venue is common-place and almost a challenge. Jay Z aside, raves and electronic dance music (EDM) concerts have had a hart time finding venues in the greater L.A. market. As the scene has grown - Electric Daisy Carnival sells more than 100,000 tickets for its annual fest in Las Vegas - neighbors' tolerance for their booming bass and party-hearty crowds has waned. On top of all that, EDM's Hard Summer festival and the FYF Fest are without their usual L.A. homes this year because their previous venue, Los Angeles State Historic Park, is closed for renovations. Hard is headed to Whittier Narrows Recreation Area this summer, as the Weekly reported first in February. One concert insider who did not want his name used told us that Hard's organizers were interested in using Grand Park at some point but would first see how things go at Whittier Narrows. Insomniac, the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival, which helped to shut raves out at the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum complex after a teen who had sneaked in and later died of ecstasy intoxication was inextricably linked to the event, is also interested in Grand Park. The company, arguably the largest EDM show organizer in the nation, announced in February that it doesn't have Southern California venues for some of its biggest annual events after holding three festivals last year at San Manuel Amphitheater. We'd love nothing more than to bring a festival back to our hometown of Los Angeles. Finding a venue that's big enough to host a festival is always a challenge, and Grand Park could be the perfect location with an amazing backdrop. Another top concert promoter who did not want to be named told us he had been talking with Grand Park officials on and off for more than a year about hosting a festival there. He wouldn't say if he had EDM, indie or something else in mind. The police memo shows that Goldenvoice's FYF Fest requested to use Grand Park two years ago but opted for the State Historic Park near Chinatown after being turned down. Though raves have been the subject of bad press throughout the nation in recent years, things have changed a lot since 2010, when L.A.-based Electric Daisy Carnival became the lightning rod for controversy over the parties. For one thing, the biggest concert promoters in the country have largely taken over the electronic dance music market. Live Nation is the king of concert companies, and it has a 50 percent stake in Insomniac. Likewise, it bought out Hard in 2012. Boosters of EDM argue that the events have become increasingly safe and professionalized as a result. We reached out to a Live Nation representative but she did not address our questions. Our concert insider who gave us information about Hard's potential designs for Grand Park said Live Nation has shown interest in doing a variety of ticketed events at the downtown venue. The Live Nation-promoted Budweiser Made in America festival featuring Jay Z, which appears to have been green-lighted by the office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, would sell 50,000 tickets for two days. It would be the first ticketed concert at the venue, which was billed as "the park for everyone" when it opened in the summer of 2012. A City Hall official who did not want to be named said L.A. leaders appeared to be open to raves, but he emphasized that each event at Grand Park would have to be considered on a case-by-case basis. "Any event is possible if it's well-planned-out," he said. Keep in mind that Garcetti, who appeared on KCAL9 TV last night sounding enthusiastic over the possibility of a Jay Z show, appears to be a fan of EDM. When he was running for mayor he held a fundraiser at Avalon Hollywood at which top DJ Steve Aoki performed. "If you like electronic music, then L.A. is where the DJ scene is at," he said during the May event. This party tonight literally could determine the outcome [of the race]. If you were each responsible for 100 voters, this room could turn this election my way. The next month he told a Reddit Ask Me Anything audience that raves should be able to return to L.A., specifically to the publicly owned Coliseum. See also: Raves Should Be Able to Return to L.A. Two representatives at the office of L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina, who is largely credited with getting Grand Park built, said she wouldn't necessarily object to raves. The venue is run jointly by the city and the county, though the city could have outsize influence as a result of having jurisdiction over park-dissecting streets that would have to be closed. When it comes to Jay Z or raves, Molina spokeswoman Roxane Marquez told us, "So far she doesn't have any objection. Grand Park was envisioned as a venue for all different types of events, including concerts. She's concerned with just making it safe. Marquez said that although an objection by Molina would carry much weight, programming at the venue is "pretty independent. We called Lucas Rivera, director of the park and the man responsible for programming. A spokeswoman said the Jay Z event was "a rental" with the city "working" directly with promoter Live Nation. We weren't able reach Rivera to ask what he thinks about raves. Hard by Timothy Norris for LA Weekly Brady Westwater, a concerned resident sometimes credited as being the unofficial "mayor of downtown," didn't like the sound of it when we told him raves could be coming to Grand Park. "If you're going to go straight-up rave I think that would be insane," he told us. "I'm not even a huge fan of doing ticketed events there. In public parks security is going to be porous at best. KPCC broke the news of the Jay Z concert Tuesday. The same day LA Weekly learned that the concert was such a done deal in City Hall that a press conference had been scheduled for Tuesday to announce ticket sales. It was canceled after news leaked of the event. Downtown area city Councilman Jose Huizar, who clearly appears to feel like he was cut out of the loop, filed a council motion that asks for a report on "any permits, actions, public safety concerns, and any necessary cost implications of the proposed" noon-to-11 p.m. event. He proposes to withhold permits until he's seen that report. One of his main concerns is downtown street closures that could last as many as 10 days, according to the motion. The mayor tried to assuage critics by saying approval for two-day party will be brought before the full City Council, although such a move is neither customary nor necessary. A few months ago the LAPD issued that opinion about the Jay Z show, unbeknownst, apparently, to the local councilman and the public at-large. The city may run into legal issues should they deny other events after allowing this Music Festival. Approximately 2 years ago, Goldenvoice Entertainment requested this area for a smaller audience (Approx 20,000 persons) and was denied. As a result, they began holding the shows in the LA State Historic Park. Allowing this Music Festival could result in several "Raves" a year in the downtown area. “I did not expect any part of the investigation of a Supreme Court nominee to be partisan. I assumed that everybody on the Senate Judiciary Committee wanted to make sure that they were putting somebody who was ultimately qualified and who was of the highest integrity. As Anita Hill remembers being called to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in October 1991, she sits in her office at Brandeis University, a wide window and institutional bookshelves behind her. Her voice is familiar to anyone who’s heard the testimony she gave, for hours, that day, a voice steady and self-assured, measured and also resolute. As she looks back for Anita: Speaking Truth to Power, the scene cuts back to that day in the chamber, a wide shot on senators and staffers shuffling through papers, reporters setting up their cameras. The tape is grainy, Joe Biden has hair, and what Hill is saying—now—sounds heartbreakingly naive. The film’s own looking back is framed by Hill, of course, and introduced specifically by an utterly weird trigger, the phone message left for her by Virginia Thomas, wife of Clarence Thomas, in 2010. “I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband,” she says, the camera focused on Hill’s office phone. As Anita—currently platforming in theaters across the US—begins with this recording, it invokes an ugly legacy of the hearings, apart from the stories of girls feeling empowered, of workers becoming aware of sexual harassment, and of authorities attending to such cases—at least sometimes. The ugly part has to do with the partisanship Hill identifies, remembered as well by Jane Mayer and Jill Abramson, who wrote Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas in 1994. Here they sit together for their interview, breaking down the iniquitous process that Hill so hopefully thought would be transparent. “The Democrats didn’t really rescue Anita Hill as they could have,” says Mayer, “And the Republicans were really busy disemboweling her. Neither did other representatives, of other communities. Charles Ogletree, the Harvard Law School professor who represented Hill in 1991, recalls, “The reason I got involved, it’s pretty amazing, but if you look around at even those who agreed to help her, there were no black men who supported her. In fact, some had tried to persuade her not to testify against Clarence Thomas, [because] ‘You don’t do that to a brother.’” Ogletree’s memory underlines the impossible choices presented by the hearings, as “sides” were variously ordained by race, gender, class, and political affiliation. Anita makes clear this much with its extensive use of footage from the hearings, the repeated questions put by white men, going over and over Thomas’ harassing language of Thomas, including references to “women’s large breasts” (“That’s a word we use all the time,” half-smiles Arlen Specter during his questioning), “pubic hair” and “Long Dong Silver”. The documentary includes other pieces of the “historical record”, including Thomas’ own testimony. The man who replaced Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court leans into his microphone to assert that, “as a black American,” he sees the hearing as “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. Like so many other moments in Freida Lee Mock’s film, this one is chilling. Not only does it recall a horrific instance of political partisanship, the Senate and the media so wildly misbehaving, but it also reveals that this instance was not aberrant, but a precursor of more to come. The spectacle has been replicated and exacerbated in US sociopolitical experience over the past 20 years. Indeed, as much as Hill or Mayer and Abramson might point out the peculiarities of the moment, underline Hill’s exceptional composure and courage, and the bizarre structure of the hearings as interrogation and attendant media hoopla (“They thought I was on trial,” says Hill), the film makes this other point utterly clear, that the Hill-Thomas Hearings were not an exception, but the start of an ongoing, toxic political business. Today it’s de rigueur that politicians and lobbyists set up “sides”, and that these sides tell lies, repeatedly, until they stick. U.S. exports of goods and services decreased slightly to $190.4 billion from $192.5 billion in January. However, service exports hit new record levels, driven by royalties, license fees and other private services. In addition, new data released today shows a record number of U.S. firms exported in 2012. In 2012 (the year for which data has just been released), 304,900 firms of all sizes took advantage of opportunities to sell their goods abroad. In addition, a total of 298,000 U.S. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), firms with fewer than 500 employees, exported goods in 2012, up from 296,800 in 2011. “Today’s data shows that American companies are increasingly recognizing the benefits of selling their goods and services to the 95 percent of consumers who live outside the United States,” said Secretary Pritzker. “Growing American exports is a win-win for our businesses, our workforce, and our economy, which is why we have made export promotion a key priority at the Commerce Department. Exports now support 11.3 million jobs, and we will build on that success as we continue to help U.S. firms sell more of their goods and services to new markets. Since President Obama launched the National Export Initiative (NEI) in 2010, the United States has seen an increase of 1.6 million export-supported jobs. The NEI is the first Presidential-led, government-wide export promotion strategy. Through the initiative’s focus on improving trade promotion and advocacy, reducing barriers and enforcing trade rules, U.S. exports have continued to grow. Massive data collection by itself does not guarantee the context required to solve business and IT problems... If we are smart about data, however, it will lead us in the right direction. Today's businesses are defined by the software they run on, enabling them to innovate and create new services faster. Apple re-invented the music industry through software; Netflix changed the way we consume movies through software; grocery shopping, taxi-hire, parcel-logistics, car rental, travel booking... these are all industries that have been completely disrupted by software. Assuming that your organization is well down the road when it comes to adopting the Cloud and in fact, has been utilizing the Cloud for a while, then you are likely a true believer that ultimately all of your applications will be migrated to the Cloud. It is no longer a question of "if" but more a question of "when" and "how." These days, the majority of test, dev, external websites and mobile apps are already born in the cloud. Applications make businesses run. Businesses have tons of applications ranging from purchased (commercial off the shelf) to homegrown (bespoke) and likely some customized, purchased apps that now look a lot like the homegrown ones. One of the big problems with apps is that once they are built and deployed they rarely get replaced or decommissioned. Application sprawl and aging application portfolios are among the root causes for much of the fixed cost in an IT budget and can consume close to 80% of the dollars. Apr. The term "service chaining" hasn't quite yet made it into the mainstream IT vernacular. It's currently viewed as a technical mechanism for directing packets, flows or messages (depending on where you sit in the network stack) around the network. Service chaining is the answer to "how do orchestrate the flow of data across the great divide that exists between L2-3 and L4-7"? There are already multiple implementations, some that take advantage of virtual overlay protocols like VXLAN and NVGRE, others that use proprietary tags, and some that even operate at layer 7 and take advantage of HTTP's natural redirection capabilities to move data from one service to another. Apr. While technology changes on a regular basis, IT teams have had a standard approach to administration. In recent years, however, there has been a drastic shift in data center administration. One of the biggest shifts is the adoption of private and public clouds. In part one of this series, we will examine private cloud architectures. Today, companies keep more and more data electronically in lieu of hard copies. Whether they are large multi-layer Photoshop images or files that need to be kept in order to comply with medical or financial regulations, files are getting bigger and there are certainly more of them. Historically, companies would have a series of onsite servers, a backup and retrieval system, miscellaneous supporting hardware, and lots of documented procedures. This would ultimately lead to a never-ending need for new capital expenditures. Above all, one of the biggest issues IT admins wrestle with is managing and adding server space to accommodate all those ever-growing files. Enter the cloud. Mar. Working with the Windows 8. Hopefully you never forgot Group Policy! Whenever the topic of working with desktops in business is brought up, IT Pro’s always want to manage and maintain those desktops. For me the first thing that always come to mind is Group Policy and hopefully does for you as well. Group Policy is one of the primary tools you can quickly leverage to help control your IT infrastructure. What better way to manage our desktops than with a free tool that is built into Active Directory, and has been there since the Windows NT days. In today’s post I am going to take a look at some of the new features in Windows 8.1 Group Policy as well as some of then new settings you will want to learn to leverage to help manage your desktops. Oh, by the way you can still change the users desktop background to blue, with blue labels on the shortcuts, or put the logoff command in the log in script, if you are so inclined not that I have ever done that. Mar. Cloud computing powered by open source is of growing interest all over the world. Enterprise customers are frustrated with growing costs and limitations of traditional IT software. This problem is exacerbated when start-ups appear out of nowhere to compete with agile businesses powered by the cloud. To meet customers' needs, I have seen a number of legacy IT vendors extend the OpenStack cloud platform to give their customers a viable cloud computing operating system that does not lock customers in with a single provider and limited options. Mar. Cobbling together point solutions provides tools, but doesn't promote the key collaborative intelligence integrated cloud-based unified security offers. Of all the strategies and tactics available to prevent breaches, deter data leakage and theft, control access and secure beyond the so-called network perimeter, the one that is emerging as an achievable and affordable best practice is that of unified security from the cloud. But if you look across the web, you will no doubt come across various versions of what constitutes “unified,” what is “protected,” and, what is “security from the cloud?” Luckily this means that the concept of unified security from the cloud is becoming more and more of a best practice. In general, the practice of unified security is the centralization of all security functions under one umbrella across the enterprise. This means more than ensuring data encryption. It means more than access policies. It means more than intrusion detection, malware blocking, data review. It’s more than ensuring compliance to the various regulatory bodies that provide general guidelines. It is the sum of all these things…and more. Mar. Perhaps not as popular as its brothers and sisters I, P and S, Network-As-A-Service or NaaS has slowly started to appear in industry press, articles and presentations. While sometimes associated with a hypervisor based overlay solution, its definition is not very clear, which is not at all surprising. Our industry does not do too well in defining new terms. I ran across this presentation from Usenix 2012 that details a NaaS solution that adds a software forwarding engine to switches and routers that provide specific services for some well known cloud computing workloads. Mar. Interview with Chandra Sekhar Pulamarasetti, CEO of Sanovi: Sanovi is a niche business continuity and IT recovery software company providing application-centric solutions for tier-1 and tier-2 workloads across physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure. We have over 120 customers, including service providers and multi-billion dollar enterprises across multiple vertical industries. Mar. A recent joint study from IDC and the National University of Singapore (NUS) predicts that companies around the globe will spend around $491 billion in 2014 for fixes and recovery from data breaches and malware. The sponsor, Microsoft, also noted that pirated software tweaked with intent is a common method of getting inside. Consumers will likely spend $25 billion as a result of those security threats. $491 billion is a lot of change and in the spirit of Mobile Threats Rise 261% in Perspective, I wanted to know what else costs $491 billion. Apparently, quite a few things! U.S. motorists may spend a record $491 billion for gasoline this year. Expensive oil and increased exports have kept our fuel prices high this year. We are still under the 2008 average gas price record but we will still spend more due to gas going up sooner in the year and staying high longer. I know I’ve seen $4.11 here in California where the average is $3.94. While the winter blend production does bring some relief, don’t expect major drops due to higher global demand along with the various feuds in the world. Mar. Infrastructure must balance between applications and the network because otherwise werewolves would cease to exist. In science we're taught that gravity is the law. As it relates to us living here on earth (I can't speak for all you displaced aliens, sorry) there are two gravitational forces at work: the earth and the moon. The earth's gravity, of course, keeps us grounded. It's foundational. Without it, we're kind of up a creek (or an atmosphere, as it were) without a paddle. werewolf-4 The moon's gravitational pull is a bit different in that's it's pulling in the opposite direction. It's pulling upwards whereas the earth's gravity pulls us downward. Mar. In the cloud storage industry, we talk a lot about “price wars.” Every 6 months or so, one of the major cloud storage providers drop their prices, and everyone else follows suit. Well guess what? Game over. Perhaps you’ve heard Google dropped the cost to $0.026/GB per month for standard storage (GCS) and $0.020/GB per month for DRA (Durable Reduced Availability). Of course, there will still be more price drops here and there, but fundamentally we’ve reached the point where cloud storage has effectively been commoditized. Mar. As an informed senior executive, you already know that it's no longer a question of whether cloud service adoption is the right forward-thinking business technology strategy, but rather how you will leverage the abundance of new resources to outpace your competition. More companies will be working within very heterogeneous cloud service environments, thereby putting more pressure on IT organizations that must deal with these additional complexities, according to a recent market study by Cloud Connect and the Everest Group. Data isn’t just for data scientists and analysts anymore, but for the masses – especially sports fans. Data and analytics have always been a key factor in talking sports since analysts and enthusiasts have always discussed players’ performance and team rankings based on their percentages and other data. But, there are two recent changes that have entered the playing field and have put more of a focus on sports data for anyone who is interested – the accessibility of data and the availability of real-time analytics. Through the use of mobile devices and websites that use extensive sports databases and update in real-time, sports fans have had the ability to keep tabs on games without actually being at those games. Sites like NBA.com/stats feature updated individual and team stats and give sports fans a deeper look into the numbers behind the game. Or, how about the app experience? Fans are able to learn more about the game and players when they’re physically at the game, simply by reaching into their pockets. Maybe you want to quickly settle a data debate over which basketball team won the most games in 1990, or you want to see who had the highest batting average in the MLB in 2011. All this information (data) is available at the tips of a sports fan’s fingers. Recently, I saw a great update in my Facebook newsfeed, which was sponsored by Bud Light. The update read, “Disguise live basketball scores and stats in an office spreadsheet. Get tools to track hoops,” and linked to a spreadsheet to track NCAA tournament stats. If that’s not making data cool, I don’t know what will. And sites such as Google, are tracking specific online and mobile browsing habits during sporting events. This year’s March Madness data is showing that fans are watching NCAA games through livestreaming at work (yikes!) and turning to their mobile devices. The results also show that searches are heavy on fans trying to create the perfect March Madness bracket and win Warren Buffett’s ultimate challenge. So, with modern technology and the availability of extensive data and analytics, it is safe to say that the numbers aren’t reserved for the traditional data geek…data is now considered cool. Infrastructure lending company IDFC's stock after rallying 8.7% in initial trading closed 2.2% at Rs 125 on Thursday even as the company was among the only two (out of 25) to get a licence (Wednesday evening) to set up a bank. While the 36% share price gains since beginning of March is partly responsible for the fall, IDFC is also expected to witness slower growth in its balance sheet and earnings, and pressure on its return ratios in the initial 2-3 years of setting up the bank, say analysts. Since the focus will now shift to successful transition to a bank, the stock may remain under pressure in the near-term. However, most analysts remain optimistic from a long-term perspective given the management's proven track record. "Though in first and second year of incorporation, RoEs (return on equity) will be dragged down, it is a long term positive as it offers cheaper funding options for a large scale lender. Citing the banking story, we are raising our target multiple to 1.3 times FY15 estimated adjusted book value, leading to a revised target price of Rs 150," says Kajal Gandhi of ICICI Securities. Subramanian Iyer of Morgan Stanley Research, however, says, "This is a long term positive as it reduces risk. However, stock performance over the next 12-24 months will likely be weak as profitability will come under pressure." Valuation is expensive in the context that RoE is less than cost of equity. By FY20, we expect RoA (return on assets) to decline to 1% from 2.9% (FY13) for IDFC. Longer-term gains depend on execution, adds Iyer. Out of the 15 analysts polled by Bloomberg in March 2014, eight have a Buy, six a Neutral and one a Sell rating on the stock. Their average target price stands at Rs 127 an upside of just 1.3% from Thursday's closing price. Currently, IDFC trades at 1.1 times FY15 estimated book value. In the initial years, IDFC will need to comply with the banking license requirements (in 18 months), which come with its challenges. IDFC will have to change the company structure, but, more importantly, it will have to reduce FII shareholding from 54% currently to 49% in the existing listed company (IDFC). Also, the non-operating financial holding company (NOFHC) will have to reduce its shareholding in the bank to 40% in the first three years. This can lead to dilution of book value, depending on the price it is able to get from investors. A premium pricing would, however, result in good gains for existing investors of IDFC. However, Gandhi says, "The easiest route is to give NBFC (IDFC) shareholders proportional shareholding in the NOFHC, though it may require RBI nod. IDFC will have to expand its branch network with 25% of these in rural areas (low ticket, less profitable) as well as maintain Statutory Liquidity Ratio (23%) and Cash Reserve Ratio (4%). These along with priority sector lending (PSL) norms will put IDFC's profits under pressure and RoA and net interest margin could halve to 1.3% and 2% respectively, over the next 2-3 years, say analysts. To reduce the regulatory impact of CRR, SLR and PSL, balance sheet size may also see some pressure. "We expect lDFC's core infrastructure loan book to decline by 10-15% over the next 2-3 years; however, overall loan book is likely to increase due to incremental lending towards priority sector. RoEs will fall to 8% in the first two years and gradually increase to 15 per cent by FY20," says Nischint Chawathe of Kotak Institutional Equities. Chawathe expects net profit to decline to Rs 1,300 crore in FY15 compared to Rs 1,900 crore estimated for FY14, but others like MOSL analysts expect a marginal increase in profits. Apart from enabling IDFC to diversify its loan book, a banking license will provide access to low-cost CASA deposits, improving cost of funding albeit in the long run. Infra sector accounted for 85 per cent of its loan book of Rs 54,552 crore as on 31st December 2013. While IDFC can leverage on its strong corporate relationships, it will be operating with lower capital adequacy norms which in turn will lead to higher asset (loan) growth, boosting RoEs in the longer run. "We will be raising our fair value estimate of IDFC from earlier level of Rs 134 to factor in banking license approval. We are quite optimistic about the firm?s future prospects with the license in hand," says Suruchi Jain, Equity Research Analyst, Morningstar India. Brantley native crowned Mrs. LBW Community College is reminding area high school seniors not to lose sight of what is needed to prepare for college this fall, even as they eagerly anticipate graduation and the fun of summer. “We know the excitement of graduation is high among seniors and their parents at this time of year, so we want to remind them of the steps they need to take to have everything lined up to begin college this fall,” said Renee LeMaire, LBW Community College’s public information officer and director of marketing and development. For those planning to attend LBWCC, there are several events and dates to keep in mind, she said. “A placement test, called the COMPASS, is required for all new students to determine if they are college ready or need a refresher course. The only exemption to this requirement is if the student scored 20 or higher on the ACT in English, reading, and math,” she said. LBWCC offers the COMPASS test in Andalusia on April 4, May 16, June 6, June 20, July 11, July 18 or Aug. 8, 2014, at 9 a.m., and July 31 at 5:30 p.m. In Opp, the COMPASS test is offered at 1 p.m. on April 3, May 15, June 5, June 19, July 10, July 17, and Aug. 7, and at 5:30 p.m. on July 31. COMPASS test dates set for the Greenville campus at 1 p.m. are May 14, June 4, June 18, July 9, July 16, and Aug. 6, and at 5:30 p.m. on July 31. Testers should arrive in the Student Services office at least 15 minutes in advance, and bring a photo ID and completed current admissions application, said LeMaire. Although there is no charge for those taking the test for the first time, the cost is $8 for anyone needing to retest. Planning for college always includes the financial aspect, said LeMaire. “We encourage everyone to do some homework and compare the cost of tuition and fees at four-year institutions to that at LBW. A student can take the same courses here, taught by faculty credentialed at the same level, and pay less than half in the cost of tuition and fees,” said LeMaire. Students in need of financial assistance should not delay in completing the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov, which is the first step in qualifying for Pell Grant or any other type of federal financial aid, said LeMaire. “The priority date to have the FAFSA completed is July 15, and students need to be sure to include LBW’s code of 008988 in order for our financial aid department to receive and process the information in a timely manner. Incoming freshmen should also participate in the orientation session on the campus they plan to attend. “Orientation in Andalusia is July 22 and 24. The date for Opp is July 23, and in Greenville it is July 21,” said LeMaire. “By attending, students will get a better understanding of college life. They will tour the campus so things are not so confusing the first day of class. They will also meet faculty and register for classes while they are on campus, which usually means classes are not yet full and they should be able to get what they need. Fall semester registration officially begins July 11 for all classes at all locations. LBWCC offers academic transfer courses in a number of settings, including traditional classroom, online, and hybrid courses that include both.
