NEW YORK (AP) — A classic spoof of the Revolutionary War finds Gen. George Washington interrupted by a bill collector out on the battlefield. "Could you come back in a little while?" Washington proposes. "I'm going down in history at the moment. In real life, Washington didn't know he was going down in history any more than do the characters of "Turn," a new AMC drama about four young Americans who find themselves part of an espionage network destined to help the Continentals beat their British oppressors. It premieres Sunday (9 p.m. EDT). History records these childhood friends were the core of what was dubbed the Culper Ring. But history remained pretty tight-lipped about it, at least until now, as "Turn" shines an overdue light on their gallantry. "We're catching these heroes before they were heroes," says Heather Lind, who plays wife, tavern-keeper and spy Anna Strong. "I didn't know I was auditioning for a real person till about three auditions in. Adding spice to the tale is the mutual yearning of Anna and her former fiance, Abraham Woodhull, in their small Long Island town. Years earlier, Abraham broke off their engagement. Each married another. Now, reunited by their patriotic cause, they find their long-thwarted romance will be rekindled. "He knows Anna is who he should be with," says Jamie Bell, who plays the much-conflicted Abraham. And when the war throws them together, "she's the one who makes him face his fears and find his voice. The 28-year-old Bell, born in England, began his career as a kid star in the 2000 musical feature "Billy Elliot," wowing moviegoers with his skill as a hoofer. Subsequent films include "King Kong," ''Nicholas Nickleby," ''Flags of Our Fathers," ''The Adventures of Tintin" and the current "Nymphomaniac." He is married to actress Evan Rachel Wood. Lind, 31, who grew up near Albany, N.Y., has logged a number of stage credits and a recurring role on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire. Then Jamie came in and introduced himself and I was sort of looking down at him. No wonder. Bell has a wiry but compact build ("I'm 5-feet-8 after yoga, when I've stretched myself out") and Lind reports her height as 5-feet-7 — that is, when her lustrous brunette locks aren't poufing up a bit. "At the last minute, right before the audition, I snuck a pair of flats out of my bag and changed shoes," she says. "Very Anna Strong-like," says Bell admiringly. The couple's easy, joking banter strikes quite a contrast to Abraham's haunted demeanor, and to that of Anna, who, in Lind's portrayal, exhibits a world of pain and resolve in her enormous brown eyes. "On the show, I look so SERIOUS!" Lind says. "But there ARE a few scenes toward the end of the season where there's laughing. "Why?" asks the reporter. "You can use that word if you like," she replies with an explosive giggle. Meanwhile, they have been busy helping the struggling Continentals hang on. "Turn," which wrapped its first season just one day before this interview in New York, was shot around Richmond, Va. Billeted there with Bell and Lind were Seth Numrich as Ben Tallmadge and Daniel Henshall as Caleb Brewster, the other members of the undercover quartet. The series also stars Kevin R. McNally, Burn Gorman, Angus MacFadyen, JJ Feild and Samuel Roukin as the slithery Redcoat Capt. Simcoe, who viewers will love hating from his boots to his powdery wig. Speaking of which: "The men on this show have more makeup and hair than WE do," cracks Lind. "Do you know how long it takes to straighten out his ponytail?" she says with a nod toward Bell. "I wear a little extension," he concedes. "I've been wearing it for five months and I took it out yesterday for the final time. But his real point of contention is with a certain wardrobe item. "I HATE tricorner hats," Bell declares. The show's solution: a knit cap was fashioned for Abraham that looks like an 18th-century version of the headgear that Bell wears in real life "cocked to one side," he laughs, "because I think it's cool. You'll notice in the show that if I have a tricorner it's in my hand, never on my head. And if it's on my head, there's been an argument that day. Indeed, one scene in the premiere finds him wearing his tricorner, "but I had to," he explains, "and in my next scene you see me chucking it into a wagon. "If only it were that easy to chuck my corset off," says Lind. Not that she's complaining. She thinks "Turn" is poised to spark a new fashion craze. "That's my dream," she says. It's the second San Antonio-area home that he's listed for sale in the past two years. Two years after her death, Whitney Houston's home in Mendham, N.J., is back on the market for $1.499 million, down 14 percent from its last price. Houston bought the home in 1987. It last sold for $16.6 million in Aug. 1998, Zillow says. Guess Which Rapper Put Down $4. Ludacris purchased a stunning 6,000-square-foot modern abode in the Hollywood Hills for $4.8 million. Rapper and actress Queen Latifah listed her massive estate in Colts Netck, N.J., for $2.399 million. The nine-acre property has an Olympic-size swimming pool and 7,500 square-foot home. The home itself has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The home is about 20 minutes from the Jersey shore and an hour south of New York City. "Saturday Night Live" former cast member Chris Kattan has listed his Los Angeles home for just $1.998 million. Born and raised in the Hollywood area, Kattan co-starred as SNL star Will Ferrell's club-hopping buddy in the 1998 film "Night at the Roxbury." The gated, two-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home was once owned by actor Danny DeVito, the Real Estalker blog notes. 'American Hustle' producer & billionaire Larry Ellison's daughter, Megan buys a home. A producer for the comedy film "American Hustle," Megan Ellison, bought a $20 million contemporary Los Angeles estate, plus a neighboring parcel for $10 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home has two guest apartments. The daughter of billionaire Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, she recently sold three properties in L.A. and bought an apartment in New York. House of Cards actress Constance Zimmerman listed her 2-bed home in L.A. for $1.175 million. Zimmer plays a reporter for the fictional "Washington Herald" newspaper. She also has roles in "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Newsroom." She bought the home in the Hollywood Hills for $1.149 million in July 2006, adding some renovations like new heating and cooling, a new deck and "hot tub bamboo retreat. Seth Meyers Buys $3.525. Saturday Night Live cast member Seth Meyers just bought a 994-square-foot apartment for $3.525 million in the West Village. Previously listed for $3.6 million, the home's $3.5 million price tag translates into $3,546 per square foot. Katy Perry finally sells the Spanish style estate she and Russell Brand lived in before their divorce for $5.565 million. Reese Witherspoon Sells Calif. Actress Reese Witherspoon, who won the Oscar for "Best Actress" in "Walk the Line," sold her home for $4,983,500, a loss of $816,500. She bought the home from former model and designer Kathy Ireland for $5.8 million in 2008. The home had three price cuts before selling. The home sits on seven acres and has four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. There is also a barn, horse stables and carriage house. Sheryl Crow has been trying to sell her Tennessee ranch, formerly known as Cross Creek Farm, for 3 years and 9 months. Now in another effort to entice a buyer, Crow has dropped her asking price to $3.85 million. John and Joan Cusack's childhood home in Evanston, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, sold for $940,000 on Dec. 20, 2013. The five-bedroom home has been owned by the Cuscack family for more than 40 years. The acting duo's mother, Ann "Nancy" Cusack, was the seller, the Chicago Tribune reported. Their father, actor and filmmaker Dick Cusack, died in 2003. The home was listed for $990,000 first in June. Ben Gartland of SB Nation's Sporting KC blog The Blue Testament (newly and excellently rebranded) takes some time out to answer some questions we have about Sporting Kansas City ahead of Saturday's MLS Cup rematch. In terms of team chemistry it hasn't changed much. Sporting KC was used to not having him for the first few months of the season in 2013 and were able to get back into form when he left in September. He was a great teammate and was definitely liked in the locker room but Sporting KC has been able to adapt rather well. In terms of quality the situation is quite different. Instead of having a sure-fire winger opposite Graham Zusi, there is a revolving door of forwards who are all trying to solidify a spot up top. This includes CJ Sapong, Soony Saad and Sal Zizzo. While all three have definitely contributed to the squad, none of them have been able to bring the talent that Kamara brought. 2) One widely held perception around the league is that Sporting Kansas City plays a very ruthless if not overly-physical brand of soccer. I absolutely agree with the perception and welcome it. Sporting KC plays one of the most physical styles in the entire league and it works out. Yes, there is over-physicality at times but rarely is it dirty. Sporting KC had a ton of yellow cards last year, especially Aurelien Collin and Uri Rosell, but no red cards. Their style is a physical one but one where they are able to draw the line and to use their physicality to their advantage instead of as a detriment. They are able to out-muscle the bigger forwards such as Steven Lenhart and Eddie Johnson and are able to keep attacks from breaking through the back line. It's worked for three years running and I dint see it stopping anytime soon. 3) The fan base in Kansas City has shown to be reinvigorated as of a few years ago. In 2011 the entire franchise was given a fresh start: New name, new stadium and a new spirit. It was like an expansion team had been granted to the city and the city was taking it by force, except that there was already the organization of the Cauldron who had supported the team since the franchise was born. It didn't hurt that Sporting KC made a huge turnaround that year in the quality of soccer and finished first in the Eastern Conference. In regards to struggling fan bases it's really not their fault if the front office doesn't invest a lot in building a relationship with the fans. Robb Heinemann and Co have made the organization accessible to the fans, they've worked with the Cauldron to provide the best game day experience, they've put wifi in the park, held rallies for jersey reveals, paid for away match tickets and provided the kind of service to the city that brings in fans. U.S. Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued guidance designed to help individuals accumulate and consolidate retirement savings by facilitating the transfer of savings from one retirement plan to another. This guidance will increase pension portability by making it easier for employees changing jobs to move assets to their new employers’ retirement plans. “All too often, individuals moving from one job to another find it too difficult to take their retirement plan savings with them to a new employer,” said Senior Advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Retirement and Health Policy J. Mark Iwry. “This guidance is designed to make it easier for people to roll over their retirement savings to a new employer plan when they change jobs, helping them preserve and accumulate assets for retirement. Today’s ruling simplifies the rollover process by introducing an easy way for a receiving plan to confirm the sending plan’s tax-qualified status. The plan administrator for the receiving plan can now simply check a recent annual report filing for the sending plan on a database that is readily available to the public online. This eliminates the need for the two plans to communicate (with the individual as go-between), expedites the rollover process, and reduces associated paperwork. · Portability and Consolidation. Improving the portability of tax-favored savings contributes to retirement security by making it easier for savers to resist the temptation to take a lump-sum cash payout and spend relatively small accumulations when changing jobs. Experience and data suggest that preservation of savings is generally correlated with the amount of savings. When an individual’s accumulated savings are modest, as they might be from a particular employer’s plan, the amount may not seem large enough to add significantly to the individual’s retirement security – so the individual tends to spend. However, when relatively modest amounts are carried forward and combined with additional savings that continue to accumulate with each successive job – with tax-deferred earnings – it is easier to reach a critical savings mass, where the balance tips from dissipation to preservation of assets. · Management and expenses. Consolidated savings can be easier and more efficient to manage pursuant to a coherent investment strategy. Dispersion of an individual’s savings – especially smaller amounts – among various employer plans can, over time, create a risk that the individual will lose sight of one or more of the old accounts. This can occur, for example, as companies undergo corporate transitions and name changes due to mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions, and as individuals change names, move, and experience other transitions. Consolidation through rollovers can help minimize this risk. Also, maintaining fewer accounts usually results in fewer account fees; and financial institutions may charge less to manage balances that are larger after consolidation. Today’s ruling also reminds plan administrators that the conduit individual retirement account (IRA) requirements – which allowed an IRA to be rolled over to an employer-sponsored qualified plan from an IRA only if the IRA was funded solely with rollover distributions from another employer-sponsored plan – no longer apply, and illustrates how a receiving plan administrator can readily conclude that a transfer from an IRA is a valid rollover. The law allows a tax-free transfer of savings, generally referred to as a “rollover,” to a new employer’s plan. However, the receiving plan must protect its tax-qualified status by determining that the source of the funds – the former employer’s plan – is also tax-qualified and that the incoming transfer complies with applicable rules. This can pose a practical impediment to completion of the rollover, as the receiving plan may require individuals to obtain a letter or other paperwork from the sending plan, and neither plan may have a strong incentive to streamline the rollover process. Savers are often required to jump through a series of hoops, and many ultimately give up in frustration. In these circumstances, it can be simpler and faster for an individual to just take a payout of the funds rather than to continue saving them by rolling them over to the new employer’s plan. The result is more “leakage” of savings from the retirement system and less financial security for individuals in retirement. To read the ruling, click here. View the photogallery for this article. Students in 11 public elementary school were thrilled to each receive brand new dri-fit shirts last month. Over 5,000 shirts were distributed to Garapan, William S. Reyes, Tanapag, Kagman, San Antonio, Koblerville, Dandan, Oleai, GTC, San Vicente, and Rota elementary schools. The generous donation was courtesy of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, a non-profit organization founded under Tan Holdings Corp. Jerry Tan, president and CEO of Tan Holdings, personally accompanied the distribution team and helped hand out shirts at each school on Saipan. Due to the instability of flight schedules to Rota and Tinian, the distribution of shirts for these islands were pushed back. Rota received their shirts earlier this week delivered by Tan Siu Lin Foundation manager Maggie Sablan. Tinian Elementary School will receive their shirts as soon as a flight schedule can be confirmed. Each student is set to receive one high quality, dri-fit shirt, custom printed with the logo for each respective school. These shirts, comfortable for all physical education activities, yet dressy enough for Sunday school, are the same quality shirts used for Saipan Soccer School athletes and the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. Elementary teachers and staff also received Polo shirts by Ralph Lauren personalized with their respective school logos as well. School representative Naomi Nishimura expressed gratitude on behalf of the Board of the Education, the Education Commissioner, and all the public elementary school principals when donations were received at William S. Reyes Elementary School. “We are very grateful to Tan Holdings and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for the generosity and continued support of our public schools,” she added. Foundation president Jerry Tan shared: “Our family gives high regard to education, which drives our passion and commitment to influence the quality of life in education, sports, and other fields of interest through the Tan Siu Lin Foundation. Register for ‘My Account’ on the Canada Revenue Agency website (cra-arc.gc.ca) and you’ll be able to track your refund, view or change your return, check your benefit and credit payments and your RRSP limit, set up direct deposit, and much more.
