By Marketwired . SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/03/14 -- SimpleQL, the company that provides business intelligence for the rest of us, today announced the launch of its new business intelligence software platform at DEMO Enterprise 2014. In its public beta debut, Simple QL enterprise customers are able to use the platform to better understand information previously inaccessible -- without the need for an analyst or data scientist. SimpleQL will provide a live demonstration of its service on the DEMO Enterprise 2014 stage and will host live demonstrations beginning today at pavilion station #D3. "After traveling the country and vetting hundreds of companies on the DEMO Tour, we are excited to select SimpleQL to be one of the 27 companies launching new products solving big problems at Demo Enterprise," said Erick Schonfeld, DEMO's executive producer. Already, the company has 10 enterprise customers signed on to use the SimpleQL platform, which boils data analysis power down to a natural language search box, making the output quickly and easily accessible to everyone. SimpleQL's guided natural language technology, combined with its predictive query engine, walks users through a series of natural language topics and modifiers that reflect the information within the underlying data source. With this capability, business users can easily create their own analytical queries, dashboards, reports and alerts over almost any software application or proprietary database. Any interested customer can sign up for free and begin analyzing both public sources (currently CrunchBase) and supported software applications (currently Salesforce and JIRA) on demand. "Until now, BI has been more 'buzzword' than truth for business users," said Scot Gensler, CEO of SimpleQL. "We are the only company actually delivering the technology to make data that was previously buried within the enterprise available to the everyday business user. Think about it, it's like turning your entire team into a staff of data analysts -- your company just got 10 times smarter and more productive. ConteXtream, a software-defined-networking (SDN) company, has been using the platform in private beta and has seen extraordinary results. Its 15 registered users have used SimpleQL to ask over 60,000 questions in the last year, including over 3,600 unique questions, which have produced innumerable insights. "As a critical component in helping carriers meet the demands of our subscriber base, ConteXtream houses a tremendous volume of data. SimpleQL provides all of us within the organization, from CTO to Director of Business Development, the ability to easily search for and derive insights from data across all of our business functions," said Gal Kleinman of ConteXtream. "SimpleQL allows our entire organization to dig deep into our data and share those insights easily and effectively. SimpleQL is an analytics solution designed from the ground up to dramatically increase the insights that enterprises are able to derive from their data. The SimpleQL search box, supported by its guided natural language and predictive query engine algorithms, makes data personalization a reality for the first time. Once queries are created, business people can save them and create an unlimited amount of personalized dashboards to organize insights as they see fit. They can also leverage SimpleQL's automated assistants to schedule reports that appear in their inbox at intervals they define, as well as powerful alerts that notify them only when something happens -- e.g. when traffic spikes up or down more than 5 percent, inventory goes below a certain amount, a salesperson is struggling (i.e. has failed to create more than three new deals in the pipeline in the last two weeks) or killing it (i.e. has created more than 20 new deals). Leveraging queries in this way creates ongoing, actionable insights over time. SimpleQL also enables users to combine results from multiple data sources and find commonalities. SimpleQL is democratizing business intelligence by delivering ubiquitous, self-service, query based analytics to the masses. By employing guided natural language search, predictive query suggestions, dash-boarding and visualization, SimpleQL is the first solution to make true data analysis power accessible to everyone within an organization. The company was part of the Palo Alto accelerator UpWest Labs' 6th class of graduates and is based in San Francisco. For more information on SimpleQL, visit http://www.simpleql.com. Produced by the IDG Enterprise events group, the worldwide DEMO conferences focus on emerging technologies and new products innovations, which are hand selected from across the spectrum of the technology marketplace. The DEMO conferences have earned their reputation for consistently identifying cutting-edge technologies and helping entrepreneurs secure venture funding and establish critical business. As more applications and services move "to the cloud" (public or on-premise), cloud environments are increasingly adopting and building out traditional enterprise features. This in turn is enabling and encouraging cloud adoption from enterprise users. In many ways the definition is blurring as features like continuous operation, geo-distribution or on-demand capacity become the norm. At NuoDB we're involved in both building enterprise software and using enterprise cloud capabilities. In his session at 14th Cloud Expo, Seth Proctor, CTO of NuoDB, Inc., will cover experiences from building, deploying and using enterprise services and suggest some ways to approach moving enterprise applications into a cloud model. Apr. SYS-CON Events announced today that NuoDB, Inc., the leader in distributed database technology, has been named “Bronze Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 14th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 10–12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York. Everyday businesses face challenges with application deployments, maintaining business continuity and providing outstanding application performance. NuoDB leads the industry with a cloud database management system to solve these problems. NuoDB provides scale-out performance, continuous availability and active/active operation. It’s a single, logical database easily deployed in multiple locations simultaneously. This unique capability is unavailable in any other SQL product. Apr. Understanding the future of Big Data is crucial in the early stages of decision making around Big Data architectures. In the enterprise, what stands out is the need to integrate Hadoop smoothly into your existing data warehouse architecture, while taking advantage of existing skills and investments. In his General Session at 14th Cloud Expo, Marty Gubar, Director of Product Management at Oracle, will present a strategy for enabling integrated data management using both Hadoop and relational technologies. In particular, he'll look at how SQL, long the standard for the data warehouse, is increasingly being used on Hadoop. The real prize, though, is Smart SQL processing, seamlessly integrating the data warehouse and Hadoop into a single, Big Data Management System. Apr. The time has come for humanity’s first interstellar trek to Terranuvem, the cloud planet, and Chief Engineer Cyrus Agarwal has been chosen to ready a ship for the voyage. He must make the right architectural choices to transform the ship for the long journey and be prepared for the unknown. He will be tested and overcome challenges during the mission. Join Cyrus and the crew of the Stratus at Oracle VP Rex Wang’s Day 2 Keynote at 14th Cloud Expo for a unique, sci-fi movie experience while learning key success factors for your own journey to cloud. Apr. The 4th International SDDC Expo, colocated with the 15th International Cloud Expo, 6th International Big Data Expo, 3rd DevOps Summit, 2nd Internet of Things Expo, and 3rd WebRTC Summit – to be held Nov. 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA – announces that its Call for Papers is now open. Topics include all aspects of providing or using massively scalable IT-related capabilities as a service using Internet technologies. According to a recent report by Deloitte Consulting, firms using Software-Defined Networking (SDN) can save up to 50% on their networking bills. Since those bills currently add up to about 10-15% of IT budgets, that's a huge amount of cost driven out of the business. That makes it very much the right new technology at the right time. Apr. Despite the economy, cloud computing is doing well. Gartner estimates the cloud market will double by 2016 to $206 billion. The time for dabbling in the cloud is over! The 15th International Cloud Expo, co-located with 6th International Big Data Expo and 4th International SDN Expo, 3rd DevOps Summit, 2nd Internet of Things Expo, and 3rd WebRTC Fundamentals Summit to be held Nov. 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, announces that its Call for Papers is now open. Apr. SYS-CON Events announced today that MetraTech Corp., the leading global provider of Agreements-Based Billing™ (ABB), Commerce and Settlement solutions, has been named “Bronze Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 14th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 10–12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York. Commerce is driven by agreements between sellers and buyers. The best agreements can be fluidly negotiated and flexible enough to meet the needs of both sides. This allows a business to be able to adapt to new markets, new business models, or competition, giving them a distinct advantage. Apr. You hear this everywhere these days: Build applications that are cloud-native – that is, developed specifically for cloud platforms. The trouble is everyone has his or her own definition of "cloud-native." As a result, cloud-hosted applications are all over the place in their use of native features. Many are not designed properly, and they're worse off in the cloud than when they ran in the data center. What are the fundamentals of being cloud-native? As I see it, being cloud-native is more about the application architecture and design than how you code the thing. Sadly, many people – in IT and at the vendors – are missing the boat on both points. Apr. SYS-CON Events announced today that Basic6 will exhibit at SYS-CON's 14th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 10–12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York. Basic6, the tool that securely consolidates the management and control of Linux/Unix and Windows servers across Data Center, Virtual, and Cloud environments from one easy to use console, announces its extended ability to now remotely manage, control and re program Embedded Devices across the Internet of Things as well. Apr. SYS-CON Events announced today that NaviSite, Inc., a Time Warner Cable Company and premier provider of enterprise-class hosting, managed applications, managed messaging and managed cloud services, has been named “Silver Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 14th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY. You are moving workloads to the public or private cloud to save money, but you realize that the change from traditional IT to cloud means fundamental changes in the way you think about and operate the business. IT needs to be even more “service oriented,” because cloud is about providing infrastructure, platforms, or Software as a Service. This focus on services drives fundamental changes to processes, policies, governance, security, chargeback / showback, provisioning / orchestration, monitoring, configuration, licenses, procurement, resource/capacity management, etc. Mar. In his session at 14th Cloud Expo, Chris C. Kemp, former NASA CTO and co-founder of OpenStack, will explore the origins of OpenStack, diving into how this technology advanced NASA’s mission and helped the White House ignite a cloud computing revolution across the federal government. He’ll take a close look at how the fastest growing open source project in history evolved – and where it’s going – before turning our attention to the forces that have catalyzed this revolution and are reshaping enterprise computing. Finally he will look at some examples of cloud technologies and architectures that are enabling the most successful (and often newest) companies to challenge their largest and most entrenched competitors. Mar. SYS-CON Events announced today that Gigamon®, a leader in traffic visibility solutions with the innovative Unified Visibility Fabric™, has been named “Silver Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 14th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY. Today the ability to increase revenue by utilizing recurring revenue models is driving new business for companies in all market sectors. However, delivering the features, benefits, and capabilities necessary to enable companies to offer products or services on a recurring basis can be a challenge. At the same time, companies prefer to augment their existing systems and services rather than replace them. In his session at 14th Cloud Expo, Brendan O'Brien, co-founder of Aria Systems, will examine the key issues for executives and their IT staff who are mandated to leverage their legacy systems and services in order to drive new recurring revenue. Mar. A myriad of new methodologies and technologies from cloud computing to BYOD have changed the IT landscape demonstrably. In parallel, higher-value functions around data, customer engagement and revenue growth are pushing CIOs to consider alternative approaches. The nexus is moving IT to a zero footprint infrastructure model. Organizations including Healthcare, Financial Services, Insurance and Airlines are moving in this direction. Unfortunately, traditional IT paradigms present a challenge to adopting these new methodologies. Mar. yourfanat wrote: I am using another tool for Oracle developers - dbForge Studio for Oracle. Fear & Loathing in the Enterprise Cloud (with apologies to Hunter S. New Cloud. New Rules. Cloudy With a Chance of... Data is dumb but we can't seem to get enough of it these days. An entire industry has evolved to make sense of the massive amounts of data being generated every day. Massive data collection by itself does not guarantee the context required to solve business and IT problems... If we are smart about data, however, it will lead us in the right direction. Today's businesses are defined by the software they run on, enabling them to innovate and create new services faster. Apple re-invented the music industry through software; Netflix changed the way we consume movies through software; grocery shopping, taxi-hire, parcel-logistics, car rental, travel booking... these are all industries that have been completely disrupted by software. Apr. Assuming that your organization is well down the road when it comes to adopting the Cloud and in fact, has been utilizing the Cloud for a while, then you are likely a true believer that ultimately all of your applications will be migrated to the Cloud. It is no longer a question of "if" but more a question of "when" and "how." These days, the majority of test, dev, external websites and mobile apps are already born in the cloud. Applications make businesses run. Businesses have tons of applications ranging from purchased (commercial off the shelf) to homegrown (bespoke) and likely some customized, purchased apps that now look a lot like the homegrown ones. One of the big problems with apps is that once they are built and deployed they rarely get replaced or decommissioned. Application sprawl and aging application portfolios are among the root causes for much of the fixed cost in an IT budget and can consume close to 80% of the dollars. Apr. The term "service chaining" hasn't quite yet made it into the mainstream IT vernacular. It's currently viewed as a technical mechanism for directing packets, flows or messages (depending on where you sit in the network stack) around the network. Service chaining is the answer to "how do orchestrate the flow of data across the great divide that exists between L2-3 and L4-7"? There are already multiple implementations, some that take advantage of virtual overlay protocols like VXLAN and NVGRE, others that use proprietary tags, and some that even operate at layer 7 and take advantage of HTTP's natural redirection capabilities to move data from one service to another. Apr. While technology changes on a regular basis, IT teams have had a standard approach to administration. In recent years, however, there has been a drastic shift in data center administration. One of the biggest shifts is the adoption of private and public clouds. In part one of this series, we will examine private cloud architectures. Today, companies keep more and more data electronically in lieu of hard copies. Whether they are large multi-layer Photoshop images or files that need to be kept in order to comply with medical or financial regulations, files are getting bigger and there are certainly more of them. Historically, companies would have a series of onsite servers, a backup and retrieval system, miscellaneous supporting hardware, and lots of documented procedures. This would ultimately lead to a never-ending need for new capital expenditures. Above all, one of the biggest issues IT admins wrestle with is managing and adding server space to accommodate all those ever-growing files. Enter the cloud. Mar. Working with the Windows 8. Hopefully you never forgot Group Policy! Whenever the topic of working with desktops in business is brought up, IT Pro’s always want to manage and maintain those desktops. For me the first thing that always come to mind is Group Policy and hopefully does for you as well. Group Policy is one of the primary tools you can quickly leverage to help control your IT infrastructure. What better way to manage our desktops than with a free tool that is built into Active Directory, and has been there since the Windows NT days. In today’s post I am going to take a look at some of the new features in Windows 8.1 Group Policy as well as some of then new settings you will want to learn to leverage to help manage your desktops. Oh, by the way you can still change the users desktop background to blue, with blue labels on the shortcuts, or put the logoff command in the log in script, if you are so inclined not that I have ever done that. Mar. "In Greek mythology, Atlas (/??tl?s/; Ancient Greek: ?????) was the primordial Titan who held up the celestial sphere. He is also the titan of astronomy and navigation." (Wikipedia, Atlas) How apropos, then, that DNS should be much like the Atlas of the Internet, responsible for guiding users to their digital destinations by resolving easy to remember names (like constellations) into IP addresses (like coordinates used in astronomy to locate the stars). Mar. Cloud computing powered by open source is of growing interest all over the world. Enterprise customers are frustrated with growing costs and limitations of traditional IT software. This problem is exacerbated when start-ups appear out of nowhere to compete with agile businesses powered by the cloud. To meet customers' needs, I have seen a number of legacy IT vendors extend the OpenStack cloud platform to give their customers a viable cloud computing operating system that does not lock customers in with a single provider and limited options. Mar. Cobbling together point solutions provides tools, but doesn't promote the key collaborative intelligence integrated cloud-based unified security offers. Of all the strategies and tactics available to prevent breaches, deter data leakage and theft, control access and secure beyond the so-called network perimeter, the one that is emerging as an achievable and affordable best practice is that of unified security from the cloud. But if you look across the web, you will no doubt come across various versions of what constitutes “unified,” what is “protected,” and, what is “security from the cloud?” Luckily this means that the concept of unified security from the cloud is becoming more and more of a best practice. In general, the practice of unified security is the centralization of all security functions under one umbrella across the enterprise. This means more than ensuring data encryption. It means more than access policies. It means more than intrusion detection, malware blocking, data review. It’s more than ensuring compliance to the various regulatory bodies that provide general guidelines. It is the sum of all these things…and more. Mar. Perhaps not as popular as its brothers and sisters I, P and S, Network-As-A-Service or NaaS has slowly started to appear in industry press, articles and presentations. While sometimes associated with a hypervisor based overlay solution, its definition is not very clear, which is not at all surprising. Our industry does not do too well in defining new terms. I ran across this presentation from Usenix 2012 that details a NaaS solution that adds a software forwarding engine to switches and routers that provide specific services for some well known cloud computing workloads. Mar. Interview with Chandra Sekhar Pulamarasetti, CEO of Sanovi: Sanovi is a niche business continuity and IT recovery software company providing application-centric solutions for tier-1 and tier-2 workloads across physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure. Sanovi Cloud Continuity for Cisco UCS Director is built on our proprietary and innovative Application Defined Continuity (ADC) technology. We have over 120 customers, including service providers and multi-billion dollar enterprises across multiple vertical industries. Mar. A recent joint study from IDC and the National University of Singapore (NUS) predicts that companies around the globe will spend around $491 billion in 2014 for fixes and recovery from data breaches and malware. The sponsor, Microsoft, also noted that pirated software tweaked with intent is a common method of getting inside. Consumers will likely spend $25 billion as a result of those security threats. $491 billion is a lot of change and in the spirit of Mobile Threats Rise 261% in Perspective, I wanted to know what else costs $491 billion. Apparently, quite a few things! U.S. motorists may spend a record $491 billion for gasoline this year. Expensive oil and increased exports have kept our fuel prices high this year. We are still under the 2008 average gas price record but we will still spend more due to gas going up sooner in the year and staying high longer. I know I’ve seen $4.11 here in California where the average is $3.94. While the winter blend production does bring some relief, don’t expect major drops due to higher global demand along with the various feuds in the world. Mar. Infrastructure must balance between applications and the network because otherwise werewolves would cease to exist. In science we're taught that gravity is the law. As it relates to us living here on earth (I can't speak for all you displaced aliens, sorry) there are two gravitational forces at work: the earth and the moon. The earth's gravity, of course, keeps us grounded. It's foundational. Without it, we're kind of up a creek (or an atmosphere, as it were) without a paddle. werewolf-4 The moon's gravitational pull is a bit different in that's it's pulling in the opposite direction. It's pulling upwards whereas the earth's gravity pulls us downward. Mar. In the cloud storage industry, we talk a lot about “price wars.” Every 6 months or so, one of the major cloud storage providers drop their prices, and everyone else follows suit. Well guess what? Game over. Perhaps you’ve heard Google dropped the cost to $0.026/GB per month for standard storage (GCS) and $0.020/GB per month for DRA (Durable Reduced Availability). Of course, there will still be more price drops here and there, but fundamentally we’ve reached the point where cloud storage has effectively been commoditized. Mar. As an informed senior executive, you already know that it's no longer a question of whether cloud service adoption is the right forward-thinking business technology strategy, but rather how you will leverage the abundance of new resources to outpace your competition. More companies will be working within very heterogeneous cloud service environments, thereby putting more pressure on IT organizations that must deal with these additional complexities, according to a recent market study by Cloud Connect and the Everest Group. Their latest market study reveals the increasing influence of cloud services on IT budgets, staff skills and business strategy. Moreover, the findings within the "2014 Enterprise Cloud Adoption Survey" report debunks hyped-up perceptions with key facts. Mar. One of the most common phrases heard when new technology is introduced is that it's going to "bridge the gap" between X and Y. X and Y are almost always one of three IT groups: development, operations and networking. And while that goal is admirable (and indeed there are techno-cultural issues that have and continue to cause friction between these groups) one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of rainbow-and-unicorn harmony between these groups is terminology. It's not just a case of difference of opinions on pronunciation, a la "you say toh-mah-toh I say tah-may-toh", it's the use of the same word to mean very different (and yet very similar) things. Mar.
