The fossilized bones of a 65 million-year-old giant crocodile were in several cardboard boxes on the counter of the new natural history lab at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. The boxes, strong and sturdy, were nothing special. They said Skippy Peanut Butter on the side. Paleontology can be a low-tech science that way. Near the lab counter were tools of the trade mounted on the wall, like in any handyman’s garage. Chisels, picks, hammers, trowels and brushes, and smaller versions. "We use everyone’s old dental tools," said David Parris, a paleontologist and the museum’s head curator of natural history. "It hasn’t changed much," said Jason Schein, the assistant curator. "We still use plaster of Paris and burlap bags. Cardboard boxes held the prehistoric crocodile found in South Jersey, and volunteer Wayne Callahan was matching teeth to a jawbone. The bones were unearthed by one of about 100 avocational paleontologists like Callahan who work closely with the museum. Parris uses the word "avocational" rather than "amateur," because most are really good at finding stuff and turning it over intact. "New Jersey is one of the greatest places on earth if you’re a paleontologist," Parris said. "Of the 11 (geologic) periods in which we identify fossils, nine of them are in New Jersey. We know we’re the birthplace of baseball, college football, the telegraph, the electric light, Grover Cleveland, the motion picture industry, the semiconductor, Frank and Bruce. Now add North American paleontology to that list. The first dinosaur fossil discovered in North America was a Jersey guy, the Hadrosaurus, pulled out of a marl pit in Haddonfield in 1858. "South Jersey is where paleontology got started in the new world," Schein said. This story begins 145 million years ago when the ocean covered many of the low-lying areas of the state, and deposited greensand, a sedimentary rock rife with glauconite, a mineral later used in fertilizer. But long before man discovered spreading it on fields — make that, long before man — the greensand was a soft place to land, for dead animals. The website fossilsites.com lists the quarry as one of several hundred New Jersey places where people can traipse back a few million years by digging out bone fragments or full skeletons of creatures we’ve only seen re-created in natural history museums or in movies. Such fossils have been found in 19 of 21 counties, from Sussex to Cape May. There are 88 sites in Monmouth alone, yielding everything from sponges to shark teeth. And that army of avocational paleontologists has unearthed plenty. The giant croc was found by John McCauley in a Mantua Township greensand quarry. "We have hundreds of thousands of specimens in storage," Parris said. "And we have many international scientists who come to study here. One of the most recent discoveries is the partial arm bone of a giant prehistoric turtle unearthed by Greg Harpel, a chemist from Oreland, Pa., who normally hunts shark teeth. He was working in Colts Neck’s Big Brook, a fossil hot spot, when he came upon a partial arm bone of a giant loggerhead turtle. He turned it over to the museum and Schein took it to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia to research the fossil. What Schein found in Philadelphia was the other half. The top end of the arm was discovered in 1849 — yes, 1849 — in Colts Neck. "It’s a remarkable coincidence," Parris said. The turtle bone story is now part of New Jersey’s paleontology lore. The state has yielded some of the earliest mammal fossils in the world, a very rare baby mastadon find and, of course, the Hadrosaurus. On the second floor of the museum, the space is clear for a new Natural History Hall. A replica of the Haddonfield dinosaur is already in place, front and center.
